The portal would function similar to WordPress, TypePad, or other content management system (CMS) for weblog entries, links, etc. There could be a few different rules applied here for site moderation, etc. All of it would be tied directly to the game, though. This would all lead toward the all-important APG. [...]

Fishing would be a good example of in-game auxiliary play. My original thought on this would be something you could do outside the main game client that could affect the game in some way.

Perhaps the best example is an eBay-like auction website where you can buy/sell in-game goods. I'm not a big fan of in-game auctions (i.e. SWG bazaar) because I can usually find what I need myself, but the idea of playing the game without actually playing is what I'd like to see.

Another idea along these lines was brought up by a coworker who played SWG. He said that SOE should make the Holonet. Players could go to a website and read real-time in-game news (i.e. Empire seized a shipment of weapons from a Bothan named HairyDogBoy today.). He also said that there should be a profession for Holonet Journalist. He went into detail on skill and experience on it, too. It was a very cool idea. You could even get XP based on the number of reads your article got.

Shadows of Isildur MUD and many other MUDs have their in-game help system tied to dynamic web pages. This is what originally inspired this idea. Then, I saw that The Matrix Online had integrated AIM chat and thought it was a cool idea. It gave the idea that you were chatting with people that were actually inside the Matrix, like the movie.

This is the idea behind Gone Fishing, though I focused more specifically on fishing as an example of the greater concept. Glad to see someone besides me is thinking along these lines.
